This may affect you… I do hope you will still follow my blogs.. you can still subscribe by email and you get the blog sent to you as it is published. Or if you use RSS or Feedly or similar, nothing changes.

The main difference is that if you comment using a non Google account, you may have to change that. Comments are what keeps us going, we like to know that someone is reading and sharing. I do hope this doesn't inconvenience you. Your support is much valued.

 Thank you, Crissouli

In 2011, we announced the retirement of Google Friend Connect for all non-Blogger sites. We made an exception for Blogger to give readers an easy way to follow blogs using a variety of accounts. Yet over time, we've seen that most people sign into Friend Connect with a Google Account. So, in an effort to streamline, in the next few weeks we'll be making some changes that will eventually require readers to have a Google Account to sign into Friend Connect and follow blogs.

As part of this plan, starting the week of January 11, we'll remove the ability for people with Twitter, Yahoo, Orkut or other OpenId providers to sign in to Google Friend Connect and follow blogs. At the same time, we'll remove non-Google Account profiles so you may see a decrease in your blog follower count.

We encourage you to tell affected readers (perhaps via a blog post), that if they use a non-Google Account to follow your blog, they need to sign up for a Google Account, and re-follow your blog. With a Google Account, they'll get blogs added to their Reading List, making it easier for them to see the latest posts and activity of the blogs they follow.

We know how important followers are to all bloggers, but we believe this change will improve the experience for both you and your readers.

OUT WITH THE OLD

’tis out with the old and in with the new
or so they say it is how it should be…
We clean all the house and make all the plans
to work on what we see as wrong
but take just a moment and think yet once more
is that really what does make you strong?
For haven’t we made the best of our lives
dealt with whatever has come as we may ..
We struggled and coasted, laughed and have cried
and greeted each morning, each day.

This is our plan, where we’re meant to be
we do just the best that we can..
so long as we’re honest, helpful and kind
and care for each woman and man..
If we open our mind as well as our heart
this New Year will be all we could need
take time to give thanks for all that you have
and you can’t help but be happy indeed.

AUSTRALIA DAY Jan 26, 2016

HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY!

* PLAIN DAMPER

2 cups self raising flour,
1/2tsp salt,
1 1/2 cups milk,
1tsp sugar,
1tsp butter.

Method:

Sift the flour, sugar and salt into a bowl and then add the butter, add enough milk to make a manageable dough. Shape into a flat ball and place on a greased and floured oven tray, bake at 220c(400f) for 25-30 mins, baste with milk during cooking.

Serve hot...with lashings of butter (golden syrup and/or jam, go very well with this bread)

* CHEESE AND SAGE DAMPER

Ingredients:

2 cups wholemeal (self raising)flour,
3/4 cup grated cheese,
1/2tsp paprika,
1/2tsp black pepper,
1tsp dried sage leaves,
40g butter or margarine,
1 cup milk(evaporated),
3tsp milk,
2tsp parmesan cheese(grated),
2tsp poppy seeds.

Method:

In a food processor, add the flour, paprika, pepper, sage, add the butter and process, till crumbly.

Add the evaporated milk and milk, grated cheese and mix to a soft dough, on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough and shape into a flat ball (20cm)(8")

Using a sharp knife, cut almost through the dough (making 8 wedges), brush the top with milk and sprinkle with parmesan cheese and poppy seeds.

Bake at 180c(350f) for 25-30 mins, serve warm with lashings of butter.
N.B. If you don't like sage, try chives, or spring onions or parsley, whatever you wish...

* CHRIS'S PAVLOVA

6 egg whites
2 cups castor sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons white vinegar
1 1/2 reaspoons vanilla essence

1 punnet strawberries
icing sugar to dust
pulp of two passionfruit... optional

600ml whipped cream

Set electric oven to 150C... pavlova needs to be cooked in the coolest part of the oven for 45-60 minutes, then turn off heat and leave in oven till oven is completely cold.

Beat egg whites at highest speed until they stand in peaks. Sift castor sugar and very gradually sprinkle in sugar, about 1 tablespoon at a time...beat only till all sugar has been added.  Lastly fold in vinegar and vanilla essence.

Mark out about a 15 cm circle on greased baking paper or aluminium foil. Heap mixture on the circle on the paper/foil. Mould up the sides with a spatula, don't bother to smooth it out, but do make a slight depression in the centre.

When completely cool, heap whipped cream in the centre, then add strawberries, sliced mainly some whole, then passionfruit if using them.  Dust lightly with icing sugar... enjoy.

I prefer pavlova the next day, but don't mind it any way. The fruit filling can be varied according to taste. I also like kiwi fruit  and /or berries. The vinegar gives the marshmallow like centre and a crisp outside, much nicer than commercial pavs which are all marshmallow or all crisp.

* AUNT MARY WALSH’S SPICE CAKE

1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups Self Raising flour
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon mixed spice
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Cream butter and sugar, add unbeaten eggs, one at a time. Mix well.  Add sifted dry ingredients, alternately with milk.

Bake at 180’C or 375’F for 40 minutes.

* EASY LEMON TART - QUICK DESSERT

Serves: Six
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 40 minutes
Ingredients:
  • 1 sheet shortcrust pastry
  • 1/2 cup of castor sugar
  • 1/2 cup of lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup of cream
  • 4 eggs
  • Lemon rind finely grated
  • Icing sugar for dusting
  • Thick cream to serve
Method:
  1. Preheat oven to 180C or 160C for a fan oven.
  2. Grease a 22cm pie dish.
  3. Line prepared dish with pastry. Trim edges. Chill for 15mins.
  4. Line pastry dish with baking paper fill with rice and bake for 15mins. Remove rice and bake further 5mins.
  5. Mix together eggs, sugar, juice, rind and cream. Pour into prepared tart shell.
  6. Bake 30 to 35mins until set. Cool in pan.
  7. Dust tart with icing sugar. Serve in wedges topped with thick cream.

Just a few easy ideas... feel free to add yours below in comments...

Of course, I haven't listed what we are really likely to have... fresh salads, juicy prawns, bbq sausages, bbq steak, ok... and lamb... if you can get it off lay-by in time...and lots of fresh fruit...

However you spend Australia Day, spare a moment for those who made this great country what it is today and dwell on the positive, as we work together to keep it that way.

Oliver outlined how he began his research and collated information on the O’Connells in Clare, a journey that took him 15 years to complete.

The O’Connell family were transplanted to Clare from Caherbarnagh outside Sneem in County Kerry in 1653 by the Cromwellian forces and they were given some land at Cloonmackan in Inagh parish and today the family vault is in Inagh graveyard.

Oliver has traced back a direct O'Connell line for 28 generations. his relatives being very prominent in the European armies of France, Spain, Prussia and Austria. The O’Connells were in Clare 160 years before Daniel O'Connell The Liberator arrived.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

A 150-YEAR-OLD STEAMBOAT

$

What They Found Inside The Sunken Remains

Of A 150-Year-Old Steamboat Is Still Edible

In 1856, the Steamboat Arabia left the banks of Kansas City on a routine supply trip up the Missouri River. Onboard were two hundred tons of precious cargo en route to 16 different towns along the frontier.

Steamboats were common in those days, as they were the best method of traveling up and down America's river systems. These boats were a big business at the time and were absolutely essential for trade and commerce.

Unfortunately for the Steamboat Arabia, a fallen walnut tree was waiting just below the surface of the water, hidden from sight thanks to the glare on the water from the setting sun. The impact instantly tore the hull and the boat sank in minutes. Thankfully, everyone on board was able to swim to safety, except for one poor mule who was tied to the deck and forgotten in the chaos.

The soft river bottom quickly engulfed the boat in mud and silt and in just a few days, it was swept away entirely due to the force of the river. Over time, the river shifted course and for the next 132 years, the Arabia was lost to the world until it was discovered in the 1980s, 45 feet deep underneath a Kansas farm.

Legend of the sunken ship had been passed on through the generations in the area and inspired local Bob Hawley to find it in 1987. He and his sons used old maps and sophisticated equipment to eventually find the boat half a mile away from the present-day river. The farmers who owned the land agreed to let them dig it up - as long as they were done in time for the spring planting season.

All manner of heavy equipment was brought in, including a 100-ton crane. 20,000 gallons of water had to be removed into 65-foot-deep wells.

After two weeks of excavation, the first parts of the boat appeared - the remains of the left paddlewheel and this small black rubber shoe that was lying on the deck.

They also recovered fine China, fully preserved along with its yellow packing straw. It had all been preserved perfectly thanks to the airtight mud.

On November 26, 1988, the full boat was uncovered along with its 200 tons of buried treasure.

With no air to cause spoilage, thousands of items were recovered completely intact. Jars of preserved foods were still totally edible. One brave excavator even tested it out by eating a pickle from one of the jars and found it to still be fresh.

Today, the artifacts are all housed in a museum in Kansas City called the Steamboat Arabia Museum. One of their displays is the fully preserved skeleton of that poor mule.

These jars of preserved fruits are just some of the relics recovered from the Arabia.

Thinking of all those unmade pies kinda makes me sad ...

Though most of the hats recovered from the Steamboat Arabia were wool felt, this hat is one of a rare few that were made of beaver fur, which is naturally water resistant.

All manner of clothing was found. Much of it could still be worn today.

The ship also had over 4,000 shoes, all packed up and ready for delivery. Some shoes were even lined with buffalo hair for extra warmth.

A keg of ale from 1856.

These bottles of French perfume were still fragrant when they were recovered. Ever wondered what the 1800s smelled like?

Just a few of the 29 different patterns of calico buttons found on the Arabia.

Calico fabric was a type of cotton printed with small, repeating patterns named after its point of origin, Calcutta (now Kolkata), India. The fabric was quite popular in England and the Western world and the Steamboat Arabia had several calico dresses that sadly did not survive that much time underwater. The dresses did have porcelain buttons printed in the same patterns as the dresses, however, which shows us what kinds of designs people were wearing back in those times.

A variety of (mostly unidentified) vintage medicines.

A sampling of some of the other relics recovered from the steamboat.

Would you try this 150-year-old pickle?

You can see this for yourself at
